Mythbusting the Ghostbusters

First of all, I want you to try and imagine a color that doesn’t exist. If you can, well you are either a genius, or a hoax. I think that our imagination draws its creative prowess from the things around us. Things that we see in our dreams come from the things that we see in real life. Have you ever dreamt of something that you have never seen in real life? The events, objects, people, beings, monsters, and creatures in the dreams of normal, non-psychic people are things that are possible for the dreamer to imagine. Yes you dream of monsters that do not exist, but that is because you have seen something similar in the TV, or in comic books. People who are bind since birth can dream, but they cannot see in their dreams. Our fantasy stories have dragons, sea monsters, and fireballs. The existence of these are hard to prove, however it is easy to say that the concept of these creatures and magical phenomenon were inspired by real things like lizards, fish, and flashy scientific and natural happenings like flaming arrows or even the lightning in the skies. But what inspired ghosts? Even if I can’t prove it, I believe that ghosts exist.

I had a cousin, who died a few years ago. He had leukemia. On the morning of his death, my dad claims that my cousin appeared in his dream and said goodbye. He had a feeling that my cousin was already dead even before he answered the ringing telephone that morning. True enough, the phone call brought sad news. No one knows if he really had that dream. I think he did, but no one could prove it. Maybe those Hollywood ghost movies weren’t 100% fiction after all. Maybe some of those movie plots, where ghosts communicate to the living to help them solve a crime, could have happened in real life. Perhaps the first people who believed in ghosts experienced these kinds of communication.

You can try to notice that most things that exist could be felt. You can feel things that you can and cannot see. You can feel water, air, rocks, and even emotions. Don’t you just sometimes feel scared and uneasy for no reason at all? Can’t you feel the empty space behind you while you are reading my blog? Take a look at your left, your right, behind you, if you are alone then there is nothing. Maybe this eerie feeling that you get for no reason at all are ghosts. I don’t like watching horror movies. After watching the movie “The Grudge”, I started looking behind me more often. These horror movies screw up my imagination for a while, and generally make me think of the ghosts and scary stuff when I am alone. This thing that happens to me after watching a horror movie is called stupidity :) . But what do you call the same event that happens for no reason at all? Why in the world would you think of ghosts and feel scared if nothing is there to trigger it? Maybe there is, but we just can’t see them.

I checked Wikipedia uh, . . . a few minutes ago :D . I saw a lot of facts about ghost sightings and ghost hunting. The mere existence of these ghost hunters and ghost believers in my opinion could help prove (but not prove :D ) 2 kinds of existences. First of all, the existence of believers for a certain entity for so long, COULD prove that it is real. It COULD prove but it WON’T. One thing that makes religions so believable is that they still exist till now. Christ was born about 2000 years ago, and Christianity still exists today. For me, only something either truly divine or so great would have given it the power to last so long. Since still so many people believe in ghosts, there is a chance that they really exist. Only a few people claim to see ghosts, just as a few people claim to see Jesus or Mother Mary. But I believe that the mere existence of believers for so long a time do give us at least a chance that the things are real. The second kind of existence is the existence in the believers’ world. When a person believes something, that something exists in his world for the time that he believes in it.

Now to sum everything up; let’s take a look at my earlier question: What inspired ghosts? The concept of afterlife could have come from religion, but where did religion come from? What was the concept of afterlife before the existence of religions? Could it be that an ancient human had a dream of his dead friend, and he concluded that there was an afterlife? Perhaps someone just invented the concept of a ghost, or perhaps the people who saw ghosts really saw them, but just couldn’t prove it. Proven or unproven, I still believe in ghosts.

  1. creepy!…i really had to look behind me to see if someone’s there!..gosh!stupidity!

  2. I’ll probably die earlier than you do. If there is an afterlife and the possibility of ghosts appearing to those who still live, I’ll let you know. ;)

  3. no thanks :(

  4. The author believes, though cannot prove, that ghosts exists. The author then provides an anecdote where his father had a dreams about the author’s dying cousin. Then, the phone rang the next morning bringing news of grief. The author then parallelizes ghosts with water, air, and emotions; these are things that cannot be seen but can be felt. Finally, the author parallelizes the belief in ghosts with Christian beliefs; a few people have claimed to see ghosts but a lot believes in these entities while a few people have seen Jesus and a lot believes in Him. The author finishes his entry with a restatement of his belief in ghosts.

    a. The entry showed thought and effort. He analyzed and compared different objects and beliefs with ghosts in a new perspective.
    b. The entry was not so clear and not so organized. The transitions were perfect, but the organization of idea was a bit random. Also, it was instructed that 3 anecdotes to be presented, but the way I see it, there is only one anecdote and the rest are explanations on the belief / existence of ghosts.
    c. The topic was interesting and substantial. I honestly like ghosts, they intrigue me a lot. Prowling in the dark, I always wonder whether there are other entities that are with my while patrolling the streets of Gotham. Also, the author seems to have done some research in order to support the belief in ghosts. But, as stated earlier, these research may be omitted and replaced with anecdotes.

“I like black. Black is cool. My name is Batman” -tsssssss… boo!!

  5. The author believes in ghosts but cannot prove it. He starts of by stating an experience of his uncle regarding his son who just died. Next is that weird feeling people get when they ’sense’ something but can not see it. Then there is the existence of ghost hunters. There are belivers in ghosts like there are believers of Religion. Then the author ends by saying that those things do no porve that ghosts exists but it HELPS prove.

    -nice and interesting topic.
-I liked your intro. A hook indeed
    -could have been more organized
-the last two were not anecdotes, they were just explanations
-nice title. i love mythbusters :)
